REVIEW: BLACK PEARL

TITLE Black Pearl

DIRECTOR Oikawa Takurou

SCREENPLAY Komine Hiroyuki

MUSIC Asakawa Takeshi (FLOW)

RUNNING DATE April 7-11, 2010

While searching for Sengoku Basara stage play links, I stumbled upon this post of eldoow from LJ. It was a stage play about mafias, and since I’ve always been a big fan of mafia-related stories ever since Katekyo Hitman Reborn, it caught my attention.

I watched this without subs so my review might be a little off since I only relied on attentive listening and I am not quite good at Japanese. I can understand almost 50% of the stage so, it’ll do, I guess.

So anyway, again, the play was about an unnamed mafia group searching for a black pearl that was stolen from their boss. The primary suspect was detective Takizawa’s (Yanagisawa Takahiko) assistant slash a tutor, Mitamura (Hirama Souichi). Vodka (Uehara Takuya), the right-hand man of Tequila (the mafia’s boss who owns the black pearl), together with his assistants Amazake (Aoyagi Ruito) and Rum (Yoshizawa Ryo) demanded that Takizawa and Mitamura find the black pearl until the evening; otherwise they would send a legendary hit man to kill them. Chaos ensue when an unnamed thief (Yoshimura Takuya), a hit man named Dustin Godder Chandler (Mizuta Kouki), and high school student Shimamura (Sakamoto Shougo) got involved with Takizawa and Mitamura.

If I’m not mistaken, this is the first time that I watched a detective-meets-mafia stage play. Also, this is the very first stage play I watched which made me laugh from the start until the end. Sure, there are other stage plays which had a fair share of comical and hilarious moments but this one just topped them all. I even caught myself laughing almost every three minutes. The comedic scenes broke the stereotype action-packed stories like this that I only saw on movies and television shows. I think executing the act in a hilarious way despite its serious plot was what made it unique. There were even some funny lines even though the characters were serious while saying them.

That leads me to the actors’ performance. I honestly think of giving them a perfect 10. As I’ve mentioned above, even though the actors were saying funny lines, none of them had the urge to laugh as they were all dead serious. I also praise their gestures as even the smallest ones made me laugh.

Everything took place in Takizawa’s detective agency, as the timeline was set in just a day. But that fact alone must not be overlooked since there was a big twist and that involved the office. Of course it was hard to notice the first time, but the second time I watched it, I knew something was off.

Anyway, I highly recommend this stage play. It was full of hilarity and the sequence of events will keep your eyes glued to the screen.

JUST A LITTLE... RANT.

Let this be (a little) short and blunt:

KIDO YUUYA IS SO GREAT.

As soon as they announced that he will be taking the role of Arakita Yasutomo in the second season of Yowamushi Pedal drama, I got excited (yet a little depressed because Suzuki Hiroki, one of my favorite actors won't come back to the series).

Sure, I already saw him act in Prince of Tennis musicals as Tooyama Kintarou, but that was the only time I saw him on stage, and Kintarou was a very jolly character. So when I found out that he'll play Arakita, I became reaaaaally curious. I think Arakita has a very interesting character and one of the admirable ones in the series, from his facial expressions, brash behavior up to the way he speaks (the drama CDs are totally awesome). Arakita is the complete opposite of Tooyama Kintarou and from then on, I waited and was looking forward to Kido's acting.

To be honest, he was the only one I was waiting for in the second season, and HE DID NOT DISAPPOINT ME.

His expressions are exactly how I see Arakita, and the way he speaks is almost like Yoshino Hiroyuki!

I am glad that he was able to play Kintarou, a happy-go-lucky character and a rough cyclist like Arakita.

Actually, I haven't even finished watching the first episode and I might start again this week, since Kido Yuuya appeared again in episode 6.

I'll also be watching him out on the 4th production stage of K Project as Fushimi Saruhiko, since that character was also played by Suzuki Hiroki in the first run and kinda like... Arakita. LOL.

BLOG: SHIINA TAIZOU (September 26)--RUN, RUN.

ORIGINAL POST HERE

Good evening ( ´ ▽ ` )ノ

I went to pedal training today as well!!

It's been a long time since I run, and as expected, it's tiring. LOL.

I was covered in sweat.

Well, today's photo is with Aoyagi-senpai's actor, Ryo.

I took the shot (of the picture) after running so my hair is ruffled.

Yesterday, I read the letters I received during Daiya (Diamond no Ace) from everyone. I became so happy and sad and emotionally unstable.

I'll write a reflection soon.

I wonder from where I should write.

I'm worried if it will turn to be a proper composition.

Please wait for it.

Good work today as well!!

Well then (^^)/~~~

BLOG: KIDO YUUYA (SEPTEMBER 18)--I BELIEVE

ORIGINAL POST HERE

Good evening everyone.

As already reported in some media, last September 15 during taping, an accident by [1] falling down from the bike happened to my Yowamushi Pedal co-star, Takigawa Eiji-san.

In today's announcement, the [2] diagnosis and the intentions of the person himself were reported.

[3] I myself also experienced being injured on stage in the past,
I'll understand Eiji-san's pain and difficulties.

In that painful time, more than anything, everyone's support became (my) strength.

As a colleague who works in the same production, as a friend,
I believe that Eiji-san's rehabilitation will help him return to his perfect condition.

[1] Rather, Takigawa Eiji crashed onto something resulting in him, falling badly from his bike.

[2] I think it's literally "disease's name" but I don't think Takigawa Eiji has a disease so I believe that Kido Yuuya's pertaining to the diagnosis.

[3] He must be talking about the stage Tumbling as he was part of the cast but got injured so he was replaced by Kagimoto Akira.

I had fun.

My Judgment

ALRIGHTY.

So, I was trying to calm down when I saw the digest video for Ensemble Stars! Extra Stage Judge of Knights.

Last April 16, I saw the news that Ensemble Stars will have another production, just as I suspected. I was only relying on the outcome of the first stage, and I still can't believe that Knights and Ra*bits were not complete, though Shino Hajime (played by Sakurai Keito) had a solo performance, whereas Knights members Izumi Sena (Takasaki Shouta) and Narukami Arashi (Kitamura Ryo) only performed in the last two song numbers.

What I'm saying is, they never got to perform ANY of their unit's songs namely Checkmate Knights, Voice of Sword, Silent Oath, and Fight for Judge. That fact alone made me think that there would probably have another stage, if not for Knights, then the unit is included at least.

April 16, the day after the event for Ensemble Stars game's second anniversary, came. And I was extremely happy almost screamed my lungs out if only it wasn't 2am when I found out about the news.
  • The game's main story would have a full voice.
  • There would be a Dream Live
  • There would be a 3rd batch of unit songs; and most especially
  • A new and 3rd stage was set to run in September
There were other announcements too, but I specifically focused on these four, and I was still disappointed by the delay in airing the anime version.

I was already hyper upon knowing the news, can you just imagine how crazy I went when they said that it would be a Knights-centered production? That very moment, I was screaming out loud and my Mom had to shout at me to prevent me from making any more fuss.

ALRIGHT. THE NEW ACTORS FOR THE CAST.

Last year, I saw this picture of Hashimoto Shouhei and Arisawa Shoutarou, making a V-sign with the poster of Ensemble Stars behind them. I still had no idea what the stage was that time. I thought it could be a production from an otome game or an anime I wasn't familiar with. I thought they were both part of the production, but I was oh-so wrong. I did my best to find the title of this stage production and when I found out about it, I was partly disappointed because the two were not part of the cast. But Yamamoto Ikkei and Takasaki Shouta were there, both of whom I have taken a liking to prior to that time. So, I gave it a shot, and was not totally disappointed by the production only that the songs were lip-sync.

Back in 2017, on April 11 to be precise--four days before the Ensemble Stars anniversary event, Kitamura Ryo posted this tweet, saying that he was working on a job with Hashimoto Shouhei and that it was still a secret, asking everyone to look forward to it.

I already had a hunch that time, even before they announced the new production. My friend and I started to think that if ever Ensemble Stars would have a new production, Shouhei would probably have a role in it. Five days later, my friend and I started to think of the possible roles that would fit Shouhei, and we were thinking of him as a member of Knights, specifically, Sakuma Ritsu. Well, he played Saitou Hajime in Hakuouki Musical, right? And Hajime's character has always been quiet, so I thought he could play Ritsu well.

Turns out that we won't see Saitou Hajime's character in Shouhei, but Haikyuu's Nishinoya Yuu. LOL. Since Shouhei is already used to playing the loud and mighty Noya, I don't think he'd have problems playing the always MIA and loud Tsukinaga Leo.

Now, if he's not gonna play Ritsu, then who will? Apparently, it is none other than Aramaki Yoshihiko.

I've only seen him thrice in stage as Kai Yuujirou (Prince of Tennis Musical season 2), Yamanbagiri Kunihiro (Touken Ranbu stage), and as Yatogami Kurou (K Project), but those characters were far from being the silent and always-sleepy Ritsu. So I guess he's one of the actors that I'll be observing. :)

And then there's Kitagawa Naoya. I honestly haven't seen him in any stage productions, and I haven't watched TeniMyu season three's Yamabuki match (him, playing Yamabuki captain's Minami Kentarou) so I'll also be keeping an eye on him haha!

AND NOW, THE SONGS.

Though I love all the songs of Knights, I don't think RnB like Checkmate Knights would fit the concert-showdown type of atmosphere the Ensemble Stars stage has. There was also Silent Oath, which I honestly believe is like a K-Pop song, and Tsuchida Reiou's (Suoh Tsukasa) voice is perfect for that kind of song. Voice of Sword has a catchy beat, and probably one of my favorites among all the Ensemble Stars songs. But, among those four, Fight for Judge was the only song I could think of that they could perform best. With that, I started to imagine them singing and dancing Fight for Judge since that song is meant to be performed in high spirits.

BUT, the staff announced that the plot for Judge of Knights will follow the in-game story event. I forgot the title, since that time, I haven't played that event yet. It was only a few months ago when I found out about revival events.

Anyway! I started to freak out when I thought that they might not perform Fight for Judge, as I was  thinking that they'd probably sing those songs included in the 3rd batch of unit songs, Article of Faith and Knights the Phantom Thief. Crush of Judgment is a given because...

But a few days ago, they released the digest. Actually I was too focused on the story that I didn't notice the background song, so when I listened closely, I started to scream. FIGHT FOR JUDGE WAS PLAYING IN THE BACKGROUND AND KNIGHTS WERE DANCING TO IT. It was like a dream come true, seeing my favorite unit complete and dancing in their princely uniform.
Those imaginations I had were all worth it and I can't wait to see them when the DVD is released. LOL.

I just hope I would have enough money by that time so I could buy the DVD. :D

REVIEW: MUSICAL TENNIS NO OUJI-SAMA

TITLE Tennis no Ouji-sama (Prince of Tennis)
ORIGINAL WORK Konomi Takeshi
RUNNING DATE April 30-May 5, 2003

A not-so-brief history of how my interest landed into this amazing masterpiece:

I started watching Prince of Tennis anime in 2005 and I fell in love with it instantly. Actually, it's all because of TeniPuri that I met my best friend in 2007, and we've been the biggest TeniPuri nerds in our school back then.

Because of my growing curiosity about this particular anime, I started researching about everything related to TeniPuri--from voice actors up to the live action movie. That was in 2008. Since I found Hongo Kanata to be a handsome young man and almost a spitting image of Echizen Ryoma, I decided to watch the live action. Again, I researched about the actors and I was confused because there were a lot of actors' names that came up (Yanagi Kotarou and Endo Yuuya, especially). That was when I found out that there's actually a musical for TeniPuri.

BUT! I didn't watch it yet since one, I was still addicted to the movie adaptation and two, I thought that it was weird for a sports anime to have a stage play version. I had several questions like "How are they supposed to play tennis in that small space?!", "Are those actors real-life tennis players?", and "How about the ball? What if one of the viewers got hit?". I immediately lost interest. But then, since I have lots of friends in Facebook who are also addicted to Prince of Tennis, I would read several posts about TeniMyu. One friend of mine actually stated that TeniMyu graduations make her cry. I had no idea I'd experience the same.

ANYWAY! Finally in 2012, I suddenly had the urge to watch TeniMyu for a reason I can't remember. And I knew that I made a great decision in watching this musical.

So, here's my first impression as far as I remember.

1.jpg
The line that started it all

It was a little overwhelming to see the regulars in 2.5 dimension. I never would have thought that I'd see them in this form. During this time, I still had some doubts if these actors would be able to play their characters well. But the problem about the ball was solved immediately. :)

Ichinen Trio's entrance!

Even the ichinen trio were so amazing! While they carry a little role (maybe a bit big in terms of cheering XD) in the anime/manga, I think Ishibashi Yuusuke, Hotta Masaru, and Toyonaga Toshiyuki were able to give an outstanding aura off a minor character's role. I was surprised that these three carried Horio, Kachirou, and Katsuo very well.

Aaaand, the introduction of first cast Seigaku regulars!

Gomoto Naoya as Kaidou Kaoru

Aoyama Souta as Inui Sadaharu

Moriyama Eiji as Momoshiro Takeshi

Yamazaki Ichitarou as Kikumaru Eiji

Abe Yoshitsugu as Kawamura Takashi

Kimeru as Fuji Syuusuke

Tsuchiya Yuuichi as Ooishi Shuuichirou

Takigawa Eiji as Kunimitsu Tezuka

Sadly, this part of TeniPuri has never been repeated in the history of TeniMyu. Arai's character would have made a lot of gags in the play. Er, actually, unlike in the last two seasons, this very first musical of TeniMyu focused on Ryoma's match with Kaidou and Inui, or how Ryoma was able to snatch a position of a regular.

And yes, I miss Arai a little. :D His actor was really great at portraying him, too!

And once again, the mystery of the ball!

Actually, as part of my thesis, I included TeniMyu in my essays, and some of my classmates were pretty surprised when I told them (rather, shared) that the lights were used as an effect for tennis balls. I guess I'm not the only one. But really, clever way of using lights to show that any sports anime however impossible to present the primary materials present in the anime sports (I'm looking at you, YowaPeda) can be on stage as well. :D

And by this, I was intrigued by Moriyama Eiji. He can do acrobatics too, and was very good excellent at playing Momo. Soooo, I looked at his profile and was really surprised when I found out that he is Ibu Shinji's voice actor.

There was one time when I was watching TeniPuri Perfect Live (a seiyuu event for TeniPuri), I noticed this guy who's the most handsome among the other seiyuu(s). And yep, it turns out that the "guy who's the most handsome among the other seiyuu(s)" is none other than MoriEi.

Maybe, being able to witness how Onosaka Masaya voiced Momo was one of the key factors why until this day, in my opinion, no one can beat Moriyama Eiji as the best Momo in season one.

And there goes one of my favorite actors in TeniMyu.

At first, I noticed his voice. Among the others, Kimeru sang properly and he had this aura like Fuji. Turns out Kimeru-sama is a singer and sang "You Got Game" as TeniPuri's first ending theme.

Also, the song he sang here is "The Regulars", one of my favorite TeniMyu songs. It's all because of him why I fell in love with this composition.

Aaaaaand finally, one of the main events: Ryoma's match with Kaidou!

It was short and sweet, maybe because the play's real highlight is the match with other teams. :D

Intermission songs before Ryoma's match with Inui

To lower the tension, these refreshing songs were really good, especially "Kimi to Nakama de Yokatta".

Aaaaand, the match with Inui. Like with Kaidou, this match was short and only showed the most important scenes and realizations from both characters.

My own realization is that I think that first cast Seigaku is the best among the rest. In terms of acting, almost everyone nailed their own characters.

BONUS:

Kimeru's live performance of "You Got Game" that had the fans screaming

REVIEW: ENSEMBLE STARS! ON STAGE

TITLE Ensemble Stars! On Stage (Based on the game with the same name)

ORIGINAL WORK Happy Elements K.K

RUNNING DATE June 18-26, 2016 in AiiA 2.5 Theater Tokyo

WARNING: May contain spoilers and mention of other works

Prior to watching this stage play, I had no background whatsoever of Ensemble Stars as before, I would only watch stage play adaptations of the anime(s) I’ve watched. And like I said on one of my posts, I only decided to try this one coz I thought that Hashimoto Shouhei was one of the actors (he is a part now, though).

I had a hard time watching at first, because again, the story itself was unfamiliar. Additionally, Yamamoto Ikkei, Konishi Seiya, and Takasaki Shouta were the only actors I was familiar with given that the three were from Prince of Tennis musicals and that was the only stage play I was most fond of that time. And the biggest hurdle was that there was no subtitle file so I could not understand what they were saying. A few days later, thankfully, I found one so I was able to watch the play.

Thanks to Kitamura Ryo’s opening act; he made it seem like he was explaining to transfer students/visitors aka viewers how Yumenosaki Gakuen system works. That was also how I found out that Ansute’s all about idols singing and dancing. And since that was the case, I expected that they would sing live as if they were really doing a singing showdown. Well, given that I have four years of experience in watching musicals like Prince of Tennis and Kuroshitsuji, I can tell whether an actor is singing live or doing a lip-synch. As for Ansute, I honestly think that it was the latter.

Anyway, the storyline is new to me: a school made for idols who battle it out to be at the top. In Trickstar’s case, it’s an all-out war to cause a revolution in their school that had a rotten system for a period of time. Of course it doesn’t always go easy, as said unit’s members would face different trials that would discourage them and prevent them from obtaining their goal: mainly the student council and some rival units.

As for the actors, I’ll give it an 8 out of 10. Again, I was not familiar with most of them. I watched the stage first before reading the manga and playing the game. I say that everyone nailed their respective characters very well, especially Takasaki Shouta.

Shouta played the role of an almost-obsessive/possessive senpai (Sena Izumi) to Matsumura Taiichirou’s character (Yuuki Makoto) who was his former underclassman in their modeling days. For me, Shouta stood out the most among the actors. It was probably because I saw him playing only bubbly characters like Kikumaru Eiji and Toubu Toujo(Aoharu Tetsudou) and the fact that I recently watched Shinsen5 movie that time (He played the antagonist Yoshida Toshimaru). To be honest, I was overwhelmed up until now by his portrayal of Izumi who has a fair share of saltiness in character. What got me the most though was his line, “I even thought of you as my little brother” during his scene with Taiichirou.

Shouta was able to shift from being a provocative senpai to a pensive one in just a snap, and that was one of the reasons why he instantly became my favorite actor in that stage. A little bonus: his manner of speaking as Izumi was the same as Izumi’s voice
actor’s: Itou Masami.

image
image

As for the songs, I fell in love immediately with Akatsuki’s “Hyakka Ryouran”. The unit has a traditional Japanese style but modernity is present as well. It’s like two generations combined in one. The other songs I liked are Undead’s “Melody in the Dark” and the original stage song, “Singin’ Shine”.

image
image
image

I also liked the overall stage design as what a concert setup is like with pillar-like columns. The audience members had participation as well like they were an audience in a live performance with their cyalumes/penlights on.

And these are my favorite scenes:

Ikke’s Tsukkomi scene

image

Trickstar in sync

image

Akatsuki dorks

image

And let’s not forget the craziness during the curtain call...
Another doting senpai named Ozawa Ren Akehoshi Subaru

image

This self-proclaimed wolf being cute like a dog just because he forgot what he was supposed to say

image
image

And finally, Taiichirou’s “I’m the eldest!“

image

He was actually being adorable as the character being treated as
the youngest despite the fact that he’s the eldest among the cast. And like Yuu-kun, he’s pretty handsome without his glasses on.

ANYWAY! To sum things up,from the story to the actors, I really enjoyed watching Ensemble Stars and I am really looking forward to the third stage, especially that my favorite unit is finally complete. I hope that I could watch it live though.
